The nation is preparing to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day on May 8 with parades, street parties and acts of remembrance.
On Bank Holiday Monday, 5 May the celebrations in London start at noon with a military parade from Parliament Square and along The Mall to the Queen Victoria Memorial. A flypast is scheduled for 1.45pm, weather permitting. Both will be broadcast live.

On 6 May a display of almost 30,000 ceramic poppies opens to the public at the Tower of London. The Tower Remembers runs until 11 November.
Horse Guards Parade will be the setting for a concert at 8pm on 8 May with a programme featuring performers Fleur East, Toploader, dancers from Strictly Come Dancing, Dame Joan Collins and Sir Derek Jacobi. It will be screened live on BBC One.
Remembering 1945
The Royal British Legion is holding a commemorative service at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire on 8 May. It follows a private tea party for Second World War veterans. The arboretum is running exhibitions, guided walks and talks between May and November, based on the theme The Year Was 1945.

Never Such Innocence is inviting school pupils to write poems marking the anniversary for a VE Day collection and send them in by May 15. There are two forms, one for individuals and another for multiples.
Tours, talks and a dance
War Graves Week runs from 2 to 11 May with a VE and VJ Day theme. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has planned tours and talks in different parts of the UK and overseas. It also gives you the chance to read the stories of some who never returned to enjoy the peace they had fought for.
The Army Benevolent Fund is staging several commemorative events during May to mark the anniversary and the National Army Museum has a programme that includes a 1940s dance.
