Military life often requires partners and spouses to think differently about work, income and long-term ambitions.
Frequent moves, overseas postings, changing family demands and the realities of a mobile lifestyle can make traditional career paths difficult to sustain – something X-Forces Enterprise (XFE) understands only too well.
Through its project, Supporting the Unsung Hero (SUH), it has delivered one of the largest programmes of enterprise support for military partners and spouses, helping individuals in the UK, overseas and across mobile Armed Forces life to explore flexible and realistic ways to generate income and build confidence.
For some, that may mean developing a small or micro-business that fits around family life and postings. For others, it may be a portfolio career, freelance offer, consultancy, side hustle or a longer-term business ambition that grows over time.
What matters most is that people are able to make informed decisions about what is right for them.
Supporting the Unsung Hero provides practical tools, tailored training, regular contact and ongoing support to help military partners and spouses navigate their options with greater confidence.
Taking a first step into self-employment or business can feel daunting, particularly when life already brings uncertainty. That is why provision is designed not just to inform, but to support individuals throughout the process with guidance, mentoring and a trusted community around them.
To date, SUH has supported hundreds of partners and spouses to have a better understanding of their opportunities, shape their ideas and move forward in a way that works for their circumstances. Whether someone is looking to create a limited supplementary income, test an idea, or work towards a bigger long-term goal, the team is here to help.
WHAT DELEGATES SAY
“The course gave me far more than information. It gave me confidence. I now feel much clearer about the decisions I need to make and I do not feel like I am figuring it out alone. I felt supported and that has made such a difference in helping me think about what the right next step looks like for me, when the time is right.”
Sarah Davies, February 2026
“An invaluable course to give you the confidence and skills needed to turn your business idea into a viable proposition. Delivered in an accessible but informative personal way, no death by pre-recorded content! Support continues after the course too if you wish.”
