The Ministry of Defence offers two main commuting allowances — Home to Duty Travel (HTD) and Get You Home (GYH) — which provide financial support for Service personnel who commute to work or who live away from their main home. Each allowance supports different circumstances.
HOME TO DUTY TRAVEL (HTD)
HTD offers financial assistance towards the cost of daily travel between a service person’s residence and their duty station.
● You may claim up to 50 miles per single journey for daily commuting.
● If working remotely and travelling in only on certain days, you may claim up to 250 miles per single journey, provided this is supported by a remote working authority.
● A personal contribution is deducted at source, with the rate depending on whether the residence is privately owned or MOD provided.
● Claims can be made for commuting by push bike, but not by escooter.
GET YOU HOME (GYH – TRAVEL)
GYH Travel helps reduce the impact of separation for service personnel living in single accommodation at their duty station during the working week.
● Available to those living in Single Living Accommodation (SLA) and travelling to a qualifying residence during stand-down periods.
● You cannot claim GYH Travel if you are receiving Longer Separation Allowance (LSA).
● A qualifying residence must be more than 50 miles from the duty station.
● The allowance is mileage based, paid monthly in arrears, covering the cost of two return journeys per month.
GYH (EUROPEAN COMMUTING ALLOWANCE)
This is an opt-in benefit for unaccompanied Service personnel serving in specified European countries.
● It supports up to 24 return journeys per calendar year between an overseas duty station and a UK residence.
● Travel is self funded, with reimbursement claimed retrospectively, subject to local command approval for each journey.
● To be eligible, personnel must serve unaccompanied, live in service accommodation and not receive any other UK return travel entitlements.
