Families from all three services came together at Calvert Trust’s Exmoor site for the third SSAFA short break of 2024. The 11 families took part in a wide range of activities, including horse riding, ziplining, bike riding, canoeing, rafting, and a trip to Exmoor Zoo.

The short breaks are organised for military families whose children have additional needs and/or disabilities, whether these are physical needs, communication and interaction needs or social, emotional and mental health needs.

One family said, “We tried new things we would never have thought of, and having other similar families with us helped build our confidence”.

James Hamand from Annington, sponsors of the short breaks, said, “It was amazing to see how the opportunity to enjoy a week away as a family, with the facilities and support available for children and young people with additional needs, brought such joy to all those involved.

“Watching the activities and spending time speaking with the children and their parents really emphasises the impact these weeks can have on families”.   To find out more go to, SSAFA | Short breaks and holidays for service families
