OVER the Easter holidays, families across the country can participate in the Imperial War Museum’s fun free activities, ranging from a virtual reality immersion into the night of the Dam Busters mission, to meeting veterans with incredible stories to tell. All activities are free or *included in the admission price (for IWM Duxford and HMS Belfast).


Family Ideas Lab: Documentary Challenge

Meet an Evacuee

Why were children evacuated in the Second World War? How did rationing affect daily life? What measures were taken to protect people in the Blitz?

Meet Second World War eyewitnesses who can answer questions and share their personal stories of evacuation and life on the home front.

Meet veterans and eyewitnesses in this rare chance to hear their personal stories of conflict first-hand and ask questions. Hear about everyday life in wartime and discover their extraordinary stories in this interactive opportunity to explore the causes of war and its impact on people’s lives.


Virtual Reality Experience: The Dam Busters

Wednesday 4 April, 11am – 3pm

Try out a brand-new, cutting-edge virtual reality experience, combining the latest technology with a physical set, to mark the 75th Anniversary of the ‘Dam Busters’ mission. Suit up, become a virtual wireless operator and experience a Lancaster Bomber aircraft from a new perspective. See and hear some of what the crew experienced on the night of the Dam Busters mission.

Special chance to meet veterans and eyewitnesses, in the shadow of IWM Duxford, to hear their personal stories of conflict and to ask questions with your family. Their moving stories and knowledge of the aircraft and daily life during wartime will bring this extraordinary historic site to life in new ways.


Build an aeroplane: do you have what it takes?

Could you be an aeroplane designer? Can your family beat our challenges? Join us to design and build the perfect paper plane, learning about the principles of flight in the process.
