ADVERTORIAL

With tales of ChatGPT cheating abound, the summer issue of Army&You includes a focus on ‘technology and teaching’ that takes a virtual tour of a number of Forces-friendly schools and colleges to explore their approach to all-things artificial intelligence (AI), interactive learning and online safety.

In anticipation of the issue hitting homes from the 3rd June, regular advertiser and contributor Millfield School shares its ‘digital doctrine’ with readers and presents a reassuring take on ‘tech’.

At Millfield School, technology and teaching go hand in hand to create a forward-thinking, engaging, and safe learning environment. We are committed to equipping students with the digital literacy they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving world, while ensuring teachers are confident and empowered to use technology in meaningful, pedagogically sound ways.

We are disrupters in the use of AI, which is at the forefront of our innovation. From personalised learning experiences using teacher-created subject specific chatbots to AI prompts for revision, assessment, and feedback, we are exploring how AI can enhance both teaching and learning.

Staff have been supported this academic year through an ongoing AI CPD programme delivered by the Director of Educational Technology, and by a dedicated AI working party, which provides training on digital pedagogy, responsible use, academic integrity, and strategies to avoid over-reliance on AI tools. We are educating students to engage critically with AI, learning to question, evaluate, and collaborate rather than simply consume.

Interactive learning is embedded across the curriculum. Teachers use the Microsoft suite of applications and platforms like Diffit, Classpoint and Quizlet to make lessons dynamic, visual, and responsive. Students create videos, podcasts, infographics, and interactive presentations. All of which foster creativity and digital communication skills.

Online safety is a cornerstone of our digital strategy. Through our PSHE programme called CELS, computing, and tutor programmes, students are taught how to stay safe online, evaluate information sources, manage their digital footprint, and understand the implications of AI-generated content. Staff receive regular training on safeguarding in digital spaces, including managing AI misuse and social media risks.

The use of technology at Millfield isn’t about replacing traditional teaching, but enhancing it. By embracing innovation while maintaining strong ethical and safeguarding frameworks, we prepare students not only to succeed academically, but to thrive as responsible digital citizens in the world beyond school.
