Vanora Bennett is the author of six novels including Midnight in St PetersburgThe White Russian and Portrait of an Unknown Woman, the first of four English historical novels.

A journalist for many years, she studied Russian at Oxford and served as Moscow correspondent for Reuters and the Los Angeles Times. She received the George Orwell prize in the UK for “making political writing into an art”.

The White Russian, out in paperback on 26 March, follows the adventures of Evie, a young American girl estranged from her family, among the white Russian exiles of Paris in 1937.
