MUCH like the contestants settling into Mastermind’s famous black chair, Britain’s schools show off their skills in a wide spectrum of specialist subjects. Registrar Declan Rogers tells us about Taunton School’s areas of expertise…

Taunton School is one of the only schools that offers such a broad range of qualifications in the sixth form – A Level, International Baccalaureate and BTEC. This means that we can guarantee that there will be a pathway that will be suitable for every child when they get to the top of the school. The options and choices don’t narrow as they do at most other schools – at Taunton School they broaden.

You can pick and mix between the qualifications so as to better match the requirements of your post 18 plans, whether that is higher education at university or a professional qualification. Our results in all three of these individual pathways are better than our competitors. The advantage of this is that beyond school the range of post 18 pathways for our pupils are significantly better than other schools. Every year many of our students progress to universities around the world.

Our highly-regarded careers department is geared up to support pupils from the moment they arrive at school and as a result, it is almost unheard of for our pupils to struggle at university because the courses that they have chosen are invariably the right ones for them.

All of the Directors of Sport at Taunton School are bespoke professionals who come from the highest level in all of the sports we offer. They are all international and ex-international sports players and coaches. We have multiple teams in each sport due to the high levels of participation across the school. Recent successes include our U14 netball team reaching the National Finals, selections for County and District squads in cricket, selections for England Hockey’s Performance Centre and prestigious rugby academies and many more.

We have supported Forces Families for many years and our pastoral structure is geared up for this. Care is flexible and takes into account the specific needs (e.g. leave timings) of military families and we support our students with their travel arrangements. The school chaplain is also ex-military.
