IF YOU are looking for a new career or your soldier is preparing to leave the Army, it’s worth looking at Building Heroes, a charity providing free training to the entire military family.
Its aim is to tackle unemployment among those who have kept us safe by offering a seamless transition to a new career in construction. The Building Heroes foundation in property maintenance programme delivers a free, certified five-week diploma course at a variety of colleges around the UK.
Eligibility
The course is open to veterans, Service leavers and family members. All you need is a desire to pursue a career in the construction industry or property maintenance. If you are still serving in, you can attend the programme in the last three months of your resettlement. Preference for places may be given to those who are unemployed.
Course content
Training includes the following elements:
- Health safety and welfare in construction, includingConstruction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) training and examination
- Brickwork, blockwork, rendering, plastering
- Painting and decorating, tiling
- Domestic plumbing
- Asbestos awareness (either classroom or online learning and test)
- Carpentry/joinery
- Routine maintenance tasks (locks, guttering)
What are the qualifications?
The college will enrol you on a level one qualification in construction skills. You will be assessed on a range of skills across the subjects studied. In addition, you’ll receive a level one health and safety in the construction environment and your CSCS card – essential for working in the construction industry.
What happens after the course?
This will depend on your personal situation and your career ambitions. Building Heroes aims to support you into a career in the building trades, whether that is as an employee or self-employed, or whether you wish to continue your training. It provides guidance and advice appropriate to your needs.
