ARMY wife Jemima Tulloch is bringing a US exercise concept and parents’ community to Aldershot with the launch of SLAM (Sweat Like a Mother) fitness classes.

SLAM provides a unique, fun and challenging full-body workout for mums as well as their babies and toddlers, who are integrated into the exercises through music and games.

Classes run for an hour and consist of moving between 10-15 minute ‘stations’ of intense circuit exercises with the babies and toddlers stationed alongside, finishing with a core workout and stretching. If a child starts crying during the class, there’s no pressure to carry on. Jemima will be bringing along her 10-month-old daughter Iris to every class and her three-and-a-half-year-old son Jasper will attend when he’s not in nursery.

Jemima explained: “I think there’s a real need for a fitness class in the local area that brings together new parents and carers – yes dads can come too. It’s all too easy to feel isolated when you have little ones and to forgo regular exercise if it’s difficult to find childcare.

“I first came across SLAM when I was based in Kansas, in the US, as an army wife and there was no turning back. I’ve never felt fitter and stronger. I pushed myself to do things I would never have done, and I feel I am a better mum because of it. The prospect of not having SLAM when we moved back to the UK filled me with dread, so I qualified as an instructor and took classes in the US and now I can’t wait to get SLAM Aldershot up and running and to build a tribe of energetic, fit and strong mums who want to have fun!”

Future plans for SLAM Aldershot include playgroups after class and trips out to soft play, gyms, farm parks, or to do arts and crafts and cookery. Jemima also plans to encourage as many mums as possible to meet and do the local parkrun together at the weekends, with a hope of joining many more races as a SLAM team.
